Back Pain

Where is My Back Pain Coming From?

The spine is a complex structure consisting of numerous bones, discs, ligaments and nerves that work together to control our muscles and provide support for our body.  So many structures can make it hard to pinpoint the source of pain –  it could be stemming from a joint, arthritis, a bulging disc, an irritated nerve, a tight muscle.  Sometimes, back pain could be an indication of an issue with one of your organs, for example problems with kidneys, ovaries and fibroids can refer pain to regions of your back

Besides medical diagnoses, pain can be due to psychological conditions such as stress, anxiety, and depression. Oftentimes, once stress is reduced so is back pain.  Have you ever been experiencing pain for a few weeks after getting a new assignment at work and once that assignment is over, or you go on vacation, the pain seems to magically disappear  – its crazy how the mind and body work!

Your medical professional needs to take all of these things into consideration when trying to diagnose you.  Your medical history is important in figuring out the source of your pain. Don’t be alarmed if you get asked questions such as, “What time of day do you feel pain?”, “Did you start a new job or activity recently?”, “Any issues going to the bathroom?” “Any pain into your private areas?”, “ Have you gained weight recently?” These probing questions can help us determine the severity of your condition and if you need to be referred to a specialist.
